February Food Updates

It has been quite a while since my initial post after moving up here, so here is a post for all my food lovers. There have been lots of firsts, lots of awesome and definitely lots of deliciousness up here.

I also jumped back on Foursquare after realizing that I have a really hard time remembering the places I visit. I can’t believe the last place I checked-in was on Friday, October 29, 2010 – the Drake concert! Oh, and all the checkins will be private (even on Foursquare), so don’t try to find me there. If Foursquare would let me have a choice to publish my location a few hours after I check-in, that would be great! It’s private enough for me and hopefully still interesting.

Enjoy the places I have visited and remembered checking-in or snapping a photo or two since most of the time I find myself just soaking it all in. I’m in New York and trying to check-in everywhere I visit is nearly impossible. Maybe Foursquare should realize that I’ve been in a location for more than thirty minutes (or a time frame I specify) and give me a daily digest of places I’d like to check-in all at once. Maybe that’s too much of a drain on my battery.

This is a great little hang out if there’s not a huge crowd. Luckily, we got there when there when the wait was short. The drinks are really good and this might be really weird to admit, but their toast is awesome! I am not joking – their toast is really that delicious.

La Giara

501 3rd Ave. (btw 33rd & 34th)
New York, NY 10016 (map)

All I remember about this place is the food. I vaguely remember who came and what the place even looked like. I ordered a Penne smoked salmon and vodka sauce that was freaking amazing. I think this place had a good happy hour, but the dish I had definitely was the kicker for brunch. Maybe the real reason why I don’t remember the atmosphere much was because of the unlimited mimosas that hit me afterward.

Mini Deli

1266 2nd Ave (btw 66th and 67th)
New York, NY 10021 (map)

After work, I decided to stop by this deli shop I have been walking by so many times. They are a legit little deli, as their name says, and they make a mean sandwich. Definitely coming back for more when I’m looking for something quick to grab and grub.

East Japanese Restaurant

After Joseph helped me haul my desk to my place in the freezing cold, I treated him to some sushi near my place – Salmon Lovers Roll, Sushi Platter, miso soup and edamame. Apparently it’s a chain, but it was pretty good. The service was really horribly slow, so maybe if I’m looking to get sushi wish slow service, I’ll come back.

Pho Bang Restaurant

157 Mott Street (btw Grand and Broome St)
New York, NY 10013 (map)

My first bowl of pho in New York was in Chinatown and apparently I was warned about the quality compared to Houston. I searched online and there are a lot of awesome reviews, but everyone was right, it was not up to par. It’s as good as one of the mediocre places in Houston.

I did find it interesting that their fried egg rolls are called “spring rolls” and their fresh rolls are called “summer rolls.” The translation does not work directly and it’s just a little different from Houston. I need to find out the etymology is behind this.

The Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

65 Bayard St (btw Mott & Elizabeth)
New York, NY 10013 (map)

The logo of this place is completely awesome, just like their ice cream. Highly recommended if you find yourself in the area and looking for some dessert. It feels like a little mom and pop shop, but then again maybe it really is one.

Caffe Linda

145 E 49th St #3 (btw 3rd and Lexington)
New York, NY 10017 (map)

Joseph, his coworker and I went here after work. It’s a nice little place with a very relaxed atmosphere. I don’t think I will be going back since it’s near work and after hours it’s not a fun place to be.

Hane Sushi

346 1st Ave (btw 19th and 20th)
New York, NY 10009 (map)

Saturday, February 19, 2011
The sushi here is good and the drink specials definitely make it enticing to come back. It sits on the high price range, but the quality of sushi and service here was great. I will be back, just need to check happy hour times and specials.

STK

26 Little West 12th St (btw 9th and Washington)
New York, NY 10014 (map)

It was my very time in the Meat Packing district and it is really fancy. Christina took me out here and I definitely enjoyed it. Their fries, on the other hand, are really bad. Well, I think it’s better to say that I miss the Byzantio fries over whatever they gave us. This place is quite swanky for me, but I would definitely go again when I feel like getting all dressed up – whenever that will be.

Typhoon Lounge

79 St Marks Pl at 1st
New York, NY 10003 (map)

After snowboarding, we were in desperate need for food. We got back late and most places were closing, but not this one! We were lucky enough to have some friends who knew what to get here rather than just sushi. If I can figure out whatever they got us, I will return back in an instant! Maybe I should just be adventurous and pick random things out of the menu.
